The Human Advantage: Why Personal Connection Still Matters in Business
Oct 20, 2026By Kerryn Kruger
Technology has made it easier than ever to communicate, create content, and build visibility. With all that ease, human connection has become one of the most valuable differentiators in business.
We can use AI to generate ideas and automate a lot of our communication. On digital platforms, we can build professional relationships across industries, countries, and time zones.
Still, it takes more than visibility to be known, and more than frequent communication to build a meaningful connection.
Behind every business decision and every personal brand is a person with their own story, who wants to be understood.
At Brand of a Leader, we believe the strongest personal brands and business relationships start with recognizing the person behind the professional.
People Connect With the Person Behind the Credentials
Think about the leaders who have made the greatest impression on you.
Chances are, what stays with you is a story they shared or the way they made you feel during a conversation, as much as anything they accomplished.
Expertise earns credibility. Letting people see who you are makes that expertise relatable.
Many executives and entrepreneurs instinctively build a personal brand around their achievements, industry knowledge, and professional milestones. Those are important, though they only tell part of the story.
What makes a leader distinctive usually sits underneath those accomplishments, in the experiences that shaped how they see the world and the values they lead with.
In our work with leaders, we start with the individual. Our process begins with a look back at their life journey, all the way to childhood, mapping the high points and the hard ones and looking for the patterns that keep showing up. Clients often tell us it feels like therapy, and many have taken to calling it “business therapy.” From there, we explore their stories and ambitions to understand why their work matters to them, alongside what they’ve accomplished. That way, the personal brand becomes an authentic extension of who they are.
Leaders earn attention by sharing what they know, and they build trust by also sharing who they are.
Sharing who you are takes judgment, especially for a CEO. For the executives we work with, it usually means talking about the lessons they’ve learned and the decisions they’ve reconsidered, while staying mindful of how their words land with employees and investors. Openness grounded in reflection builds far more trust than oversharing does.
With trust, visibility starts to turn into influence.
The Human Connection Behind Business Opportunities
Some of the best business opportunities that come from personal branding start with human connection, and they often show up in ways we can’t immediately see or measure.
The return on personal branding tends to be less linear than traditional lead generation. Someone might follow your content for months before reaching out, or a former connection might come across one of your LinkedIn posts at exactly the right moment. A prospective client might find you through an interview or article and feel connected to your perspective before you’ve ever spoken.
On LinkedIn, leaders stay top of mind with their networks by sharing their expertise along with the experiences and values that make them who they are. Marina Byezhanova, our Co-Founder, recommends pairing thought leadership content with posts that show the person behind it. Clients are sometimes surprised when a personal photo gets more engagement than a carefully argued industry post, and Marina’s explanation is that people naturally connect with each other on a human level.
Through media features, podcast appearances, and thought leadership articles, leaders build on that connection. They gain third-party credibility, and audiences get to see more sides of their personality and expertise. Published articles and backlinks also strengthen a leader’s digital presence, so more people find them and grow familiar with them over time.
The bigger value comes after people find you, when they have a reason to feel connected to you.
We’ve seen this lead to meaningful business for our clients.
One of Brand of a Leader’s clients secured a significant account with a notable brand because the people behind that company connected deeply with what he was sharing on LinkedIn.
His expertise caught their attention, and they were moved by his values and the kind of person he showed himself to be. As a human-centric brand themselves, they recognized those same qualities in him and knew he was someone they wanted to do business with.
The relationship started with a connection to the person behind the business, and he never had to make a sales pitch.
Impressions and engagement are useful to track, though they only capture part of what personal branding does for a leader.
Sometimes the most meaningful opportunities come from letting people connect with who you are.
Human Connection Beyond Personal Branding
Connection keeps mattering long after a new client signs on.
Winning a client is a start, and building a relationship that lasts takes ongoing care.
Clients want to feel heard. They want to know their goals matter and that the people they’re working with are invested in their success. That’s how a professional service becomes a partnership built on trust.
It’s also why we value our monthly conversations with clients so much. We use those calls to gather content ideas and talk through upcoming deliverables, and just as much to reconnect as people, catch up on what’s happening in their lives and businesses, and make sure we’re aligned on what matters most to them now.
Priorities shift and ambitions evolve over time. When we make time for those conversations, we stay close to those changes and make sure the stories we tell still reflect the person behind the brand.
Even in a digital business, some of our most valuable insights come from taking the time to listen.
The same applies to leadership and the relationships inside a team. When people feel understood and valued as people, they collaborate better and bring more of their ideas to the table.
With clients, colleagues, and business partners alike, how people treat each other shapes what it’s like to work together.
Expertise and results build credibility, and people usually decide whether to keep working together based on the quality of the relationship. The strongest business relationships are built on the trust and mutual respect that develop along the way, alongside what people accomplish together.
Business Will Always Be Human
As technology keeps changing the way we work, the ability to connect with people will only become more valuable.
We can use AI to create content faster and digital platforms to reach more people. Trust still comes from being understood by another person.
We use AI at Brand of a Leader too, and Marina describes our approach this way:
“We use AI to free up our team so they can focus on the work only humans can do.”
A leader can publish every week and still hold back what makes their perspective unique. A company can run an efficient service while its clients feel overlooked.
Building connection takes intention and curiosity, along with a willingness to see people as more than their job titles.
That belief is at the center of our work. We help leaders uncover and share the stories that make them distinctive, and we bring the same care to our client relationships and our own team.
Personal branding, in the end, is about being understood by the right people. And business comes down to the relationships we build and the people we support along the way.
As more of business gets automated, human connection remains one of the greatest strengths a leader can bring.
