Executive Branding is quite simply a process of expressing who you are in order to manage how you are perceived (both internally and externally), as well as expand your visibility. Visibility is the core benefit of building your executive brand. Gone are the days where your network was limited to people close to your immediate circle and reputation hinged on the number of hands you shook and the frequency with which you directly engaged with other people. We are now in an era where executives (no longer only Founders and no longer only CEOs) are building their visibility by leveraging online networks and intentionally building their digital footprint.
When you are intentional with building your executive brand, you achieve a multitude of goals. Firstly, you build trust among your immediate stakeholders, as well as those once or twice removed. Whether you are applying for board seats, or new career opportunities (internally or externally), decision makers will Google your name, likely look up your LinkedIn profile, and possibly search you up in an LLM (ChatGPT, Claude, and so on). What they see and what they read will then determine their first impression of you. And yes, you can definitely let that impression be formed on their own. Or, as more and more executives now do, you can be more intentional with impression management and carve out your online presence in a way that best matches not only what you do but also who you are as a leader.
This guide will unpack the WHAT, the WHY, and the HOW of building your executive brand. It will give you a clearer understanding of the benefits of scaling your visibility, as well as a step-by-step guide that you can use to begin executing on it.
This guide will be particularly useful for GenX leaders as it is designed for tenured leaders who are less comfortable with “self-promotion” or concerned with lack of privacy commonly associated with expanded visibility. At Brand of a Leader, we work with CEOs, founders, and senior executives across all verticals and geographies, making this guide geography- and vertical-agnostic.
Let’s get started.
What is executive branding?
Most executives we work with at Brand of a Leader, are deeply uncomfortable with the idea of putting themselves out there and being more public. The word “branding” itself is off-putting to most as it feels to be rooted in vanity and self-promotion. And yet, the concept itself is increasing in relevance and we are onboarding more and more executives across the globe to work with us on building their executive brands.
If the “branding” is indeed not so comfortable to you, replace it in your mind as you read this guide or as you begin having conversations on this topic. Call it building your visibility or expanding your network - anything that can make the process less uncomfortable. Words do matter!
If it helps, remember that the term itself was coined by Dr Tom Peters, a highly esteemed academic who wrote an article in 1997 in Fast Company, titled The Brand Called You. He coined the concept and the idea far before the launch of any social media platform or even the internet.
How is executive branding different from personal branding and corporate branding?
Executive branding takes roots in personal branding; however, its ultimate goal and thus the strategic plan are tied to career management (including entrepreneurial career for Founder CEOs). The goal of executive branding is not to create side hustles, monetize one’s name, or become a social media influence. The goal is to expand visibility in order to be consider for relevant opportunities, be known in your industry, and attract a higher caliber of talent to the organization in which you are a leader. The process of building an executive brand and a personal brand are quite similar, but the goals are deeply distinct.
Why does executive branding matter for CEOs and founders?
CEOs, Founders, and Executives come to Brand of a Leader for a variety of reasons. They all connect to one core goal: growing their visibility. When your visibility scales, there is a multitude of outcomes you can expect to benefit from, such as:
- Becoming known in your industry, thus elevating the profile of the organization you lead.
- Supporting the sales and marketing function of your organization vis-a-vis your thought leadership: AI tools pull over 85% of results from third-party sources, so when you guest on a podcast, are featured in a digital publication, write an article for a third party website, all of those contribute to the findability of your organization.
- Attracting higher caliber of talent. A-players (especially the younger generation) Google their potential bosses, read their online content, listen to their interviews, and browse through their LinkedIn profiles. When they are inspired by you and feel aligned with your core values, they are much more likely to apply to work at your organization.
- Being tapped on the shoulder for career opportunities or high profile projects, both internally and externally.
- Landing board roles. Most board positions are filled through referrals and, even in those cases, stakeholders making decisions on prospective candidates do due diligence to learn more about them.
There are many other reasons to grow your visibility. Many executives prepare to transition into advisory roles post retirement from their corporate careers or exit from the business they Founded; a strong brand allows them to make that transition in a smoother manner. Some of the clients who come to us are in the process of writing a book to distill their expertise gathered throughout their decades of experience. Executive branding helps bring visibility to the book, as well.
As long as you are clear on your own goals when it comes to building your executive brand, you are able to craft a plan that helps you meet them.
What does executive branding include?
The first, and key step, before building your visibility is to create clarity on what you want your brand to be associated with. The process is quite inward-looking before it becomes outward-facing.
Once completed, you need to have:
- A strong clear angle or point of view that will help differentiate you from others and will help you stand out from others in your industry
- A brand story (aka a modern version of a bio), that will express not only what you do and what you have done, but also who you are, what unique perspective you have, and what you are like as a leader
- Strong and clear messaging points that will become 2-3 topics you are associated with
- Fully rebranded LinkedIn profile that has a designed banner, a strong byline, and a well-written About section
- A package of photos that can be used for formal and informal visibility - we recommend a few professional headshots as well as candid photography to have a package you can easily and quickly refer to
- A clear plan of action: what will be your platforms, outcomes, and deliverables in the next 12-24 months
Optionally, and depending on your goals, you may also wish to invest in:
- A personal website: if you would benefit from having a hub that holds different forms of media or communicates your advisory services or availability for speaking engagements
- Speaker reel and documentation, should you wish to pursue speaking engagements
This may feel daunting; if you would like to save time, this is exactly what Brand of a Leader helps with. We take you through a well-crafted process designed to make it less daunting and highly effective.

How does executive branding affect visibility in AI search?
Over 85% of sources AI search uses to give responses comes from earned media: your contributions to magazines, podcasts, and other forms of digital media. At Brand of a leader, we secure 2-3 bookings for our clients every single month, meaning that, after just one year of working together, you will have about 30 online sources all mentioning your name and your area of thought leadership. This will then be picked up in AI search when people look you up or look someone up within your area of thought leadership.
This is why every single engagement at Brand of a Leader begins with an AI audit of your digital footprint. We have our AI agent crawl your LinkedIn page, look you up in Google search, and ask AI about you, to see what currently comes up. Our goal is to create enough digital footprint through our work together that your visibility in AI search is impacted and scaled directly.
How do you build an executive brand?
At Brand of a Leader, we follow a well-defined and now highly refined framework. We have applied it to our work with hundreds of executives across the globe.
Step 1:
Define your unique angle or point of view.
Step 2:
Be clear on how you want to be perceived. Brand is all about perception and it needs to be rooted in who you authentically are, but can also be built intentionally.
Step 3:
Create a plan of action with clarity of: goals, stakeholders, topics to be associated with and platforms to tackle.
Step 4:
Develop assets, such as (depending on your goals): visual identity, rebranded social media platforms, speaker kit, personal website, board resume, brand story, bio.
Step 5:
Build your visibility. In the work that we do with clients, we focus on building their digital footprint by booking them as guests on podcasts, submitting their contributions to online articles, and co-writing their own thought leadership articles, which we then pitch to various digital magazines and blogs. The result is 30-40 mentions in one calendar year.
How long does executive branding take to work?
Building your visibility takes time and, much more importantly, consistently. However, if you are methodical and consistent, you will see the following results with the following timeline:
- Your LinkedIn network will become activated within 3 months of consistency. You will begin to hear from people who you are not in active contact with. This is important because LinkedIn is a strong tool for staying top of mind with people in your network. And this is how referrals are triggered.
- Your digital footprint will become stronger within 6 months of consistency. When Googled, you will see a lot more thought leadership and robust results come up in association with your name.
- Your AI search results and visibility will be affected within 12 months of consistent work.

In other words, don’t embark on this process if you plan to dedicate less then 3 months for it but budget for 12 months if you are looking to really move the needle. After that, it’s ongoing work. Same as going to the gym - 3 months is good, 12 months is better, but a lifelong commitment gives results that don’t fade.
Should you do it yourself or hire an executive branding agency?
The answer will solely depend on whether you have time to do it yourself and whether you have a budget to hire an executive branding agency, such as Brand of a Leader.
Can you build visibility on your own? Of course, you can. And yet, most people don’t, simply because of the time commitment it requires. An executive branding agency has clearly defined processes, as well as relationships to leverage, to make the experience more seamless for you and to deliver quick and consistent results.
Frequently asked questions
-
How much does executive branding cost?
If you work with Brand of a Leader, you need to budget $30,000 in year one and $24,000 per year for our work together. The return on that investment will be a solid digital footprint, higher visibility, more opportunities, and a more respectable trustworthy profile for people who look you up.
-
Is executive branding worth it?
It’s becoming a non-negotiable in the modern world. We all look each other up and 80%+ of opportunities (be that career mobility, high profile partnerships and projects, or board seats) are filled through referrals. The larger and more active your network and the more top of mind an executive is, the more successful they become in comparison to their less visible and more passive peers.
-
What's the difference between executive branding and PR?
The two are very similar. The difference is that traditional PR is a lot more costly, less accessible without highly sough after credentials, and is more focused on offline sources, thus lessening the impact on your visibility in Google and AI search.
-
Do executives need to be active on LinkedIn?
Yes, if you want to stay top of mind of your network, especially people once or twice removed, who would not otherwise think of you without consistent reminders. The good news is that you do not need to be on LinkedIn a lot - the goal is to have a sharp profile and some consistency, but frequency is not essential.
-
Can introverted executives build a strong brand?
Most of our clients at Brand of a Leader are self-proclaimed introverts! And most would rather have no visibility whatsoever, if it weren’t for the benefits it now provides. This is where having a trusted partner to work with makes a true difference. Our goal is to help you build your visibility in a way that feels authentic, intentional, and true to who you are. We don’t thrust you into a cookie-cutter approach or make you feel like an influencer you never aspired to be. Rather, we work on developing your thought leadership and build a plan that still feels out of your comfort zone, but accessible at the same time.
